How Much Sleep Does Your baby Need

Updated: Dec 5, 2024

(By Keren Giber Segev)

The breakdown is by age, of course:

0-3 months:

  • Average sleep: 14-17 hours per day

  • Range: 11-19 hours

  • 4-6 naps per day

  • Awake window: 3/4-2 hours

4-11 months:

  • Average sleep: 12-15 hours per day

  • Range: 10-18 hours

  • 3-4 naps per day

  • Awake window: 1-3.5 hours

1-3 years:

  • Average sleep: 11-14 hours per day

  • Range: 9-16 hours

  • 1-2 naps per day

  • Awake window: 2-5 hours

Each child has their own individual sleep needs within these wide ranges. As long as weight gain is healthy and there are no signs of discomfort, everything is likely on track.

We don’t need to be constantly checking the clock, especially at younger ages when there’s no morning schedule they need to follow.

It’s helpful Bring in the natural morning light and keep it gently lit or dimmed in the evening, allowing for a natural day-to-night rhythm to help synchronize their biological clock.

But most important … let’s focus on being responsive to our kids!

Observe your child’s individual signs of tiredness. Keep in mind that sometimes boredom signs can resemble signs of tiredness, so adding more activities can help them release energy.
